BERBERINE: What am I?

A traditional herbal medicine, berberine has been used for centuries for its many beneficial properties. This plant extract is extracted from a group of shrubs known as the Berberis plant. Sally Ann Creed’s Berberine Complex is a unique formulation containing berberine, milk thistle, chromium, a 4-strain probiotic blend as well as B vitamins (B1, B6 & B12). This enhances the healing properties of Berberine.

Researchers have built an impressive amount of clinical research on the use of berberine in lowering blood lipids and blood pressure. It also has the added benefit of improving blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes. Berberine exhibits a number of beneficial mechanisms to produce these effects. This includes an ability to activate the important enzyme called AMP-activated protein kinase or AMPk for short. AMPk is found inside every cell and serves as a “master regulating switch” in energy metabolism. Overall, the activity of this enzyme plays a major role in determining body fat composition and especially the amount of visceral “belly” fat.

What am I good for?

Reduced blood pressure
Assistance with diabetes, due to berberines ability to improve insulin resistance and promote insulin secretion
Anti-aging effect on skin, thanks to berberines antioxidant properties
Help for women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
Increased ability to metabolise carbohydrates, fats and proteins
Contribution to tissue formation
Contribution to normal red blood cell formation
Anticancer effects, due to berberine being able to block the proliferation of, and kill, cancer cells

The impact of Berberine on the Gut:

Positively impacts microbial balance
Increases levels of Akkermansia muciniphila which protects against obesity and diabetes
Decreases intestinal permeability or leaky gut
Tonifies motility
Promotes production of a healthy short-chain fatty acid, butyrate

The impact of Berberine on Blood Sugar:

Activates the enzyme AMPK – helps weight loss
Increases insulin secretion and cellular sensitivity to insulin
Increases glucose uptake into the cell
Decreases glucose absorption in the gut

The impact of Berberine on Cholesterol:

Inhibits cholesterol absorption in the gut
Increases cholesterol excretion into the bile
Reduces hepatic (liver) accumulation of triglycerides (fatty liver)

The impact of Berberine on Blood Vessels:

Exerts anti-contractile, anti-inflammatory and anti-atherogenic actions via AMPk pathways
Reduces pro-inflammatory response of macrophage foam cells
Promotes nitric oxide release from endothelial cells
Inhibits thrombin-induced platelet aggregation (plaque formation)
